The surrounding countryside is a combination of dry forests, grasslands and hills. Try golf on one of the four golf courses, or cast a line in some of the hundreds of productive fishing lakes around Tappen and Merritt, situated in the heart of the Coquihalla and whilst you can enjoy horseback riding, fishing, wildlife watching, you’ll find exploring the Spius Creek Fish Hatchery interesting, or in the winter months take to sleigh riding, skiing and snowmobiling. Head south to the exquisite lushness of the Okanagan Valley and Skaha Lakes, explore the delightful valley as you drive along scenic roads towards Penticton, nestled within picturesque tree trimmed mountain slopes, clay cliffs and it’s also known for its abundant orchards. Apart from the winter sports summer brings sailing, hiking, horseback riding, waterskiing, fishing, biking, swimming, wine tours, farmer markets, and miles of wonderful sandy beaches in the summer’s hot, dry climate. Go rafting along the Okanagan River Channel. If you are feeling very active then why not hike to Skaha Bluffs, one of the world's best rock climbing spots or windsurf on Skaha Lake. Discover the art galleries, museums and historical sites that Penticton has to offer.
Just a short distance from Penticton and you’ll arrive in the Tudor-themed town of Summerland, take a stroll around Vaseaux Lake and its Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary that is excellent for birdwatching. Or stop off at Hedley, both localities offering many outdoor opportunities including skiing and there are endless hiking trails for outdoor summer fun along the beautiful lakes and streams where you can fish to your hearts content. Naramata, a small community situated on the east side of Okanagan Lake is an agricultural hub for fruit growers and winemakers. Also enjoy the various boating and sailing facilities, along with fishing, canoeing, paddling and the sandy beaches of the larger lakes attract the sun seekers during the summer months.
If you visit the pretty town of Cherryville try your luck at gold panning or participate in an old mine tour, or visit the unusual eight-sided church at Peachland and its miles of beautiful beach, a boater's paradise!
