Skirt the shores of Deer Lake and head north to Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its exceptional beauty and unique geological features and providing more than 65 kilometres of mountain hiking, shouldn’t go amiss, here you can photograph herds of caribou or seabird colonies. Next along the picturesque shoreline, you’ll come across a wonderful Lighthouse and fascinating marine displays.
Cartyville is a good choice as a base to explore and further up near Broom Point is where you’ll discover the history of Canada’s earliest fishing settlements. View glacier-carved gorges on the way to Port-au-Choix National Historic Site. The exhibits here focus on archaeological finds of Maritime Archaic Indian, Dorset and Groswater Paleoeskimo people, including Recent Indians, who settled here before 2,000 BC. Enter the L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, the site of the only known Viking settlement in North America and a United Nations World Heritage Site. Tour the reconstructed sod houses and learn from costumed actors and interpreters about how the Viking lived. Also see Norse artefacts dating back to 1,000 AD.
