Avalon Region B&B Guide Newfoundland
There are many scenic drives throughout the scenic land offering beautiful river valleys teeming with wildlife and attracts many nature enthusiasts and artists.
Downtown St. John's in the Avalon region is an excellent place to go exploring, home to Puffins, Whales and Caribou. Perhaps you’ll like to stop at one of the most interesting churches, the Roman Catholic Basilica of St. John the Baptist built in the shape of a Latin Cross with twin towers reaching to a height of 137.8 feet. Another beautiful Ecclesiastical Gothic architecture building is the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, a National Historic Site, situated on Church Hill. A silver communion service presented by King William IV and other precious religious objects are kept in the Chapter House of the cathedral. A visit to Signal Hill and Canada's second-largest National Historic Site is where you’ll experience some glorious views of the city, its harbour and the stunning adjacent coastline. Also, you can see the Queen's Battery that date back from the Napoleonic Wars and watch the Signal Hill Tattoo re-enact colonial military exercises. The Cabot Tower was built in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Newfoundland and the 60th year of Queen Victoria's reign and outside the grounds of the tower you’ll find interpretive exhibits dealing with the harbour's fortifications. No wonder, due to the picture-post-card countryside and wonderful coastal views, that painters came to live making the arts scene a bustling community with poets, writers, musicians and sculptors.

As you drive through this magnificent region of rolling hills, forests, coastal roads passing beautiful beaches and marshes with a selection of delicate wildflowers and through a number of picturesque fishing communities with little quaint towns such as Conception Bay South where you can explore an old pirate locality, or Cavendish and Avondale to name but a few. Pippy Park a 1,343-hectare park offering endless outdoor opportunities for recreation and relaxation that include hiking and cross-country skiing is worthy of a visit, it has two fantastic golf courses and is also a great place to see some of the many interesting butterflies in the area.

Drive through Heart’s Delight and Heart’s Desire to the small town of Heart’s Content located on beautiful Trinity Bay and visit Cable Station Provincial Historic Site in Heart's Content where the first transatlantic telegraphic cable was received. All three towns are scenic destinations of the Avalon region and you can find hidden beach spots that are almost private. Drive south along the Cape Shore home to Gannets and the French Heritage of Placentia Bay. Close by you can tour Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve seabird sanctuary, providing one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles in the world. An interesting trip on Route 102 takes you to Ship Harbour, where the historic conference between U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill held at sea just off Ship Harbour in 1941 resulted in the Atlantic Charter. At the end of an unpaved road, off Route 102, amid the spectacular scenery of Placentia Bay there is a monument marking their meeting, which is often referred to as the ‘First Summit.’
