"My bed was firm and large and covered with a feather-soft quilt. It was so comfortable that I really didn't want to move. I lay for a while staring at the embellished ceiling, letting my mind wander and speculating on who might have lived in this Newfoundland house a century before. Just as I was drifting back to sleep, the fragrant smell of freshly baked muffins wafted past my nostrils. A rasping "parp!" from a ship in the harbour broke into my reverie and reluctantly I decided it was time to start my day." A Bonne Esperance House is located in the heart of historic St. John's. Built in the 1800s as a family home by the late Capt. William Whitely, A Bonne Esperance (or good hope) has been restored to its original charm. It's ten-foot ceilings, ornate plaster moldings and period furniture maintain the tradition of Newfoundland craftsmanship. A Bonne Esperance House is one of four identical houses built by Capt. Whitely for himself and his three sons. He called them Bonne Esperance Terrace after the fishing village Bonne Esperance where he fished each summer on the Labrador Coast. Our guest rooms continue the traditional focus with antique furnishings and fireplaces. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, color cable TV and telephones. A Bonne Esperance House is close to downtown with its many fine restaurants, crafts, shops, historic sites, and bustling waterfront. Singles, Doubles and Suites. Our rates are from $100 to $150.00. A fabulous breakfast is included.
