General Description
When you come to MacKechnie House, bring your appetite along. The food certainly reflects that Cathryn Thompson, host of MacKechnie House, is also a professional caterer. Breakfasts are delicious and varied. Starters could be Creme Caramel with strawberries, a tall tower of Amaretto - basted Baked Apples or Rhubarb Crumble with Creme Fraiche.

The next course might be French Eggs in a Dijon Sauce, Ham with Apricot Mustard and a medley of Sauteed Mushrooms. On another day, sit down to Scrambled Eggs with Canadian Cheddar Cheese and homemade Sweet and Hot Pepper Jelly, Brown Sugar Roasted Peameal Bacon and Home Fries with Fresh Herbs.

And---on top of all that, the coffee is excellent! One hundred and sixty one years ago, during the reign of Queen Victoria, a Scots woolen-mill operator named Stuart MacKechnie built his dream house in Cobourg, about 115 km east of Toronto.

Unfortunately, Stuart lived only 10 years longer to enjoy his beautiful home, but since his death 13 families and countless guests have occupied the MacKechnie House, which ranks as one of the oldest and stateliest of Ontario's stately homes.

The regal old house is still welcoming guests. Cathryn Thompson and Ian Woodburn run it as a B&B, inviting visitors to share the 19th-century ambiance of their home and the tree-shaded town of Cobourg which gracefully wears nearly two centuries of history.

After being known as Buckville, Amherst, Hamilton and Hardscrabble, the town was finally named Cobourg in 1819 for the German hometown of a Prince Leopold who married Princess Charlotte of England. Modern Cobourg is now twinned with it's German namesake and the two towns exchange greetings and visits.

Worth visiting in Cobourg (population 18,000) are the 1856 Palladian-style Victoria Hall, which now houses live theatre and an art gallery, the long sand beach and waterfront trail, the yacht harbour and King Street, the main shopping artery. The old Cobourg jail is now operated as King George's Inn.

Annual summer events include free summer concerts in Victoria Park, a Waterfront Festival from July 1 - 4, Highland Games in July and National Beach Volleyball Championships in August.

In the days before railways, a Cobourg resident named William Weller put Cobourg and other Lake Ontario towns on the map by starting a state-coach service between Toronto and Montreal. Weller set a record in 1840 by driving the then governor general, Charles Poulett Thompson, from Toronto to Montreal in 37 hours and 40 minutes.

At the famed old MacKechnie House you can stay for $75 to $115 per night in one of four high-ceilinged and equally high-windowed guest rooms. Two of the rooms have ensuite baths and two share a bathroom.

All rooms have beautifully restored antique furnishings. Ian Woodburn is a builder who specializes in restoring old houses and old furniture.

Cathryn Thompson is a highly skilled cook. Before meeting Ian and coming to Cobourg she worked as an executive headhunter and ran a
