Beginning at Lake Ontario and running north, you’ll find a lovely old-fashioned town called Port Hope and situated along the scenic Ganaraska River is the marvellous Ganaraska Trail.

Adjacent to the harbour, the east beach provides a sandy shoreline for pleasant swimming, a playground and picnic area. This is a popular place for families during the hot summer months. The downtown area has a wealth of beautifully restored early homes and buildings, second to none shopping and rumoured to be the antique capital of rural Ontario, with numerous antique and specialty shops. Stroll through the peaceful and beautifully landscaped Heritage Ecology Garden or enjoy the Capitol Theatre, the last remaining atmospheric theatre in operation in Canada today. The interior of the theatre gives patrons the illusion of sitting in an outdoor medieval castle courtyard, under a blue sky complete with moving clouds. The All-Canadian Jazz Festival is held during the summer months where you can enjoy Jazz under the Marquee. Anglers can fly fish excellent for trout and salmon in the clean cold waters of the majestic Ganaraska River that runs through the heart of town. The Ganaraska Forest provides year-round recreational opportunities for a variety of activities including hiking, mountain biking, walking, equestrian riding and in the winter months, cross-country skiing, sledging and snow shoeing on groomed trails are all available. The outdoor enthusiast will find the Waterfront Trail has a beautiful unobstructed view of Lake Ontario. This trail takes you along the lakeshore from the Port Hope Marina. If you carry on walking east towards Gages Creek, you’ll find special wetlands areas offering an abundance of wetland wildlife.
